Upper Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

Upper Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

Saggy upper arms are a common condition among individuals who have fluctuated in weight, and those who are experiencing the effects of aging. Unfortunately, the symptoms do not necessarily diminish with diet and exercise. Even a person committed to a healthy diet and fitness can exhibit saggy, droopy upper arms.

During arm lift surgery, or brachioplasty, the localized skin and fat deposits in the problem area are removed, and the underlying tissues are tightened, giving the upper arm a more contoured, smoother appearance. Woodglen Aesthetics in Glendora & Los Angeles area provides free consults for arm lift surgery at his plastic surgery practice in Glendora, along with many other procedures in body contouring.

Who Can Undergo Arm Lift Surgery?

The most common symptoms treated with arm lift surgery are excess skin and fat in the upper arm region between the underarm and the elbow. Additional markers that signal a person’s candidacy for arm lift surgery are:

  • Self-consciousness about flabby arms
  • General good health
  • Willingness to accept scars as trade-off
  • Adequate skin elasticity

During a consultation, we can determine if the arm lift can satisfy your goals for a slimmer arm shape.

What Happens During Arm Lift Surgery in Glendora & Los Angeles?

Arm lift surgery often takes place in an outpatient setting. You may be given either local or general anesthesia depending on the extent of the surgery and your personal needs. After anesthesia has been administered, we place an incision in the inside of the upper arm, either extending from the underarm to the elbow, or a shorter length.

The length of the incision depends on factors like location and amount of skin and fat to be removed. Sometimes liposuction surgery alone suffices, other times it is combined with surgical excision to achieve the desired result. After the underlying tissues are tightened, the excess skin is removed, and sutures are placed to close the incisions and help maintain shape. One drawback is the surgery scar that is left on the inside portion of the upper arm, which many patients are willing to accept in exchange for the overall cosmetic improvement.

How Will I Feel After My Arm Lift?

After your arm lift in Glendora & Los Angeles, we will provide you with specific instructions for post-operative care. Expect some bruising, swelling and discomfort. We will typically prescribe pain medications and antibiotics to support you in your recovery. He will also give you instructions on how to care for the compression garments applied after surgery, as well as the drains that are temporarily placed under the skin to remove excess fluid and blood. Most patients recover from arm surgery somewhere between 1-2 weeks once the swelling and bruising has dissipated. It will be several weeks for the incisions to heal.
