Ear Surgery

Ear pinning surgery addresses prominent ears, commonly in young children. During this procedure, permanent sutures are situated behind the ear in order to hold the ears back. Prior to suture placement, a small amount of cartilage may be removed from the back of the ear, depending on ear shape and size. Ear pinning surgery may present a viable solution for children who are constantly teased because of their large ears. If your child is afflicted with prominent ears, the procedure may help prevent the emotional damage caused by teasing, consequently fostering self-confidence.

Who Can Undergo Ear Pinning Surgery?

As stated, individuals with prominent ears, adults as well as children, may be candidates for ear pinning surgery. Woodglen Aesthetics can evaluate your ear position to determine if surgery will be beneficial or meet your expectations. The ideal candidate will have fully grown ears by the time of surgery. This means that children receiving ear pinning surgery in Glendora & Los Angeles are usually as young as 2-5 and as old as 14.

What Happens During Ear Pinning Surgery?

Ear pinning surgery in Glendora & Los Angeles is conducted in an outpatient setting, and typically lasts between 1 hour. The surgery can be done under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patients and Woodglen Aesthetics advice. First, we make an incision at the back of the ear. Next, he rotates the ‘bowl” of the ear back to a more natural position. Occasionally, he may remove a piece of cartilage, depending on the acuteness of the angle at which the ear protrudes, as well as the tissue’s shape. Finally, we place permanent sutures in order to close the incision and maintain the new shape of the ear.

After Ear Surgery: What to Expect

Immediately after surgery, the patient’s head will be bandaged to promote healing and maintain the form of the ear(s). This bandage can be exchanged for a light head dressing after a few days. Antibiotics and pain medication may be prescribed to prevent infection and help control discomfort. Most children return to school about one week following the procedure, and adults within 5 days, but recovery time varies on an individual basis.
