Hymenoplasty

Most, if not all, women experience the tearing of their hymen as a result of various things such as sexual activity, the use of tampons, and injury. Hymen is the thin skin membrane that partially covers the opening of the vagina. While there are several situations in which the hymen can tear, the breaking of the hymen is commonly associated with virginity and the first instance of sexual intercourse. Hymen restoration is performed to reconstruct the hymen after it has been torn. In some cultures, women seek hymen reconstruction for social or religious reasons.

Procedure

Under local anesthetic, the patient’s hymen is repaired by stitching together the edges of the remaining hymen. The tissues are expected to grow back together. During hymenoplasty, the vaginal walls may also be tightened to restore a virgin-like physique. Hymen restoration procedure is minimal and generally takes about 2 hours to complete, with patients able to return to work the next day. Following the operation, patients are recommended to avoid sexual activity for at least two weeks, and in some cases, for up to six weeks.

Recovery

The recovery time required post-hymenoplasty is very little. Results are immediate and most patients are able to continue their usual routine just one day following their operation. Full recovery may take up to six weeks.
